How to Create a Farm Scene on a Model Railway
Railway models have always been a favorite of most people because they not only make great toys but also great art for admiration. While the railway scale in itself already looks beautiful, how much more beautiful can you make it if you add scenery to it? One of the most beautiful ways to jazz up your railway model is to make a little farm around it.
In order to make a beautiful farm model, you’ll need a few materials and added models which you can buy in your hobby store. Here are a few things that you’ll need:
Big Wooden Board
The first thing that you have to buy is a big wooden board. This is where you’ll be sticking your railway as well as building your farm. Buy a wooden board big enough to fit your entire design and start working on it.
You’ll need some super glue that you can use to stick your tracks and your other model pieces to the board. Hardware stores and some hobby stores sell super sticky glue so you can buy that type.
In order to make your farm realistic, you need to add a nice patch of grass around it. Hobby stores sell nice artificial model hedges that you can use. Stick them on to your board around the trail in a way that looks nice.
Barns and Farmhouses
To give your farm a complete look, you’ll need to buy barns and farmhouses. There are a lot of designs that you can check out in the shop, Buy the one that suits your tastes and your preferences as of the moment.
When you make a farm, you should always include a wooden fence since all farms have fences that keep animals in. Wooden fences usually surround the barns or farm houses or are on just one side to house the animals.
Model Animals and People
In a farm, you shouldn’t forget to buy a bunch of farm animals and some people. Farm animals can include pigs, cows, ducks, horses, and maybe even sheep. Of course, you shouldn’t forget the people on the farm such as the farmers, the farmer’s family, and some farm helpers.
To add to that, you can buy a few other accessories to add to the scenery. As they say, the devil is in the details so you may want to add as much as you want. For instance, you can give your farmers tools like a rake or a lawn mower. Including a miniature lawn mower is especially cool because it shows how a farmer mows the grass in his farm.

Cool Tips on Building a Miniature Fountain Beside Your Model Railway
Wouldn’t it be cool if you can install a nice miniature fountain in your scale model? Fortunately, you can actually have a fountain near your model railway-- and you can make it as realistic as possible too. In order to make a nice fountain, you’ll need the following materials:
A miniature fountain model
A water pump
A water filter
An anti-algae solution
A water conditioner
A water control system
When you install your indoor water fountain model, you have to make sure a pump is attached to it so that the water can be circulated in and out of the fountain. This ensures that no water is wasted and the water gets cleaned regularly.
Attached to the water pump is a water filter which is the device that does the cleaning. The water that goes through the filter is freed from any bacteria, dirt, germs, and algae. Since the filter catches all these unwanted substances, you need to clean it regularly.
You may also want to install a water control system so that you may control when the water comes out of the fountain and when it stops. This is kind of like the on and off button of your fountain. You may buy this in any hobby store that sells custom scale model accessories. If you can’t find one, you may also just manually off the pump.
You’ll also need to buy some water cleaning solutions such as a water conditioner and an anti-algae solution. This ensures that the water won’t breed any mold or algae while it is inside the fountain.
If you don’t want to use actual water because you don’t want to do any maintenance, you can find other alternatives that can give the impression of water. One alternative would be to buy a fountain with the water already sculpted on it. This way, the water in the model fountain won’t be real water but is actually just part of the sculpture already.
Another cool alternative would be to use fiber optic light to give the perception of moving water. There are a lot of fiber optic lights that give off a moving and flowing effect. This will not only make your fountain look beautiful but it will also save you a lot of time and effort on maintenance.
With a few materials and lot of creativity, you can install a nice scale fountain beside your scale railway and make it come to life. Try out these tips and see how they work for you.
